I would like to take this opportunity to briefly re introduce myself. My name is Katrina Maaka and I am a Registered Nurse. I have spent my entire nursing career working in Adult Mental Health. I started working for Maketu Health and Social Service Charitable Trust in August of 2011 as the Tamariki Kahui Whetu Co-ordinator working with our 10-13 year old Rangatahi providing a Drug and Alcohol Prevention programme. It was a most rewarding experience and been involved with our Rangatahi and whanau has been a good learning opportunity.

I have now been appointed into the roles of the Community Nurse and Diabetes Co-ordinator and would like to inform you of the following services that are currently available.

This event is the first of many initiatives planned & being trial by the Taitamariki team at MK2 HASS.

A brief outlay of our day

Wednesday morning, we set out and placed the clues and flags on the designated areas around Maketu, We assigned Kaimahi at the 5 different locations.  At each point there were challenges that needed to be completed before tamaiti could move to the next destination.

Mid-day we met at Maketu Park. The spy kits were given to each group inside the kits contained mission rules, group colours, spy books pencils and a place to keep & protect their clues. Once the answer had been sort, each group received or had to find their group coloured flag before moving on.

YOUTH GUARANTEE PROGRAMME BAY OF PLENTY POLYTECHNIC

The Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is delivering the Youth Guarantee Programme in 2013 as part of the government initiative announced in the 2009 budget.

This initiative is aimed at improving the educational achievements of youth, by giving them the opportunity to participate in fully funded vocational courses. Promising to “engage young people that may otherwise be left behind by the education system” it is targeted at teenagers who are finding that school is not for them.

For 2013, the programme being offered for the Youth Guarantee learner is the:

Certificate in Maritime and Fishing Technology (Level 3 – 110 credits)

This programme has 6 courses and will be covered over the year:

1.       First Aid

2.       Seafood Processing

3.       Navigation and Seamanship

4.       Sea Survival and Safety

5.       Vessel Operations

6.       Ropes, Nets and Wires

This is a pre-sea programme that will help you develop the skill sets needed to work as a deckhand in fishing, charter and aquaculture on a wide range of vessels within the seafood and maritime industry.

There will be a requirement that foundation learning skills, like building a language skill base and understanding everyday calculations and measurements will be built into the teaching of the programme.

The Youth Guarantee Programme will be offered in three communities based at Marae at Mangatawa, Te Puke and Tauranga. Each cohort will have a minimum class size of students.

The programmes will be facilitated by coordinators who are skilled in managing both the pastoral and learning requirements of the learners in the first instance before providing full scale launch into the programme specific.  The coordinators will identify and respond to the individual and group learning and pastoral needs.

Experts from within the commercial fishing industry will deliver the knowledge and skills relative to the programme requirements.

The following activities are included as part of ensuring students are programme and life-ready. Such activities will include:

·         Vocational Planning

·         Nutrition and hydration

·         Fitness and wellness, including being able to swim.

·         Civic and community responsibility including marae and tikanga awareness

·         Environmental appreciation

·         Effective communications

·          wānanga

·         Other prior approved life skills qualifications

The programme will run from February until late November.

Applications for this programme need to be signed off by student and parent/caregiver and must agree not to apply for Student Loans during their enrolment on this course.

Rose Hellaby Scholarship 2013

I hope all is well. A prestigious scholarship offering valuable financial support to Māori postgraduate, undergraduate and secondary students is calling for applications for its 2013 round of funding.

The Rose Hellaby Māori Education Fund, for which Guardian Trust is sole trustee, administrator and investment manager, distributed $130,000 earlier this year to 120 Māori student recipients, through the Māori Education Trust.

Benefactor Rose Hellaby, a descendant of the Auckland-based meat dynasty, was most interested in furthering Māori education in the fields of science, mathematics, medicine and technology. Together, Guardian Trust and the Māori Education Trust created the Rose Hellaby Postgraduate Māori Scholarships in 2010 to specifically support outstanding Māori students undertaking Masters, PhD or other postgraduate study in these fields.  

The major recipients of the 2012 distribution were Miriama Ketu-McKenzie, Lewis Neihana-Tait Jones and Jessica Templeton. Miriama, the only Māori student in her intake was awarded the largest scholarship of $30,000 and is using it to support a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Massey University in Albany. Lewis and Jessica each received $15,000 towards their studies – Jessica is completing a Master of Engineering Management at the University of Canterbury and Lewis is working towards a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Psychology and completing a Masters in Psychology at the University of Waikato.

Applications for the 2013 scholarships are now open. Secondary applications close on 28 February 2013 and tertiary applications on 29 March 2013. Students can complete the application form online at http://www.maorieducation.org.nz

Equine Therapy Programme

Equine therapy is widely used within Mental Health services as an approach to develop areas of self-esteem, self-help, and self-confidence. Equine therapy involves working alongside equestrian services and a clinician experienced in talk therapy in establishing and nurturing a relationship with a horse.

Maketu Health & Social Services proposed using this method of intervention by working alongside local equestrian Briar Mascheretti to support a group of young persons to take part in equine therapy.  Briar offered her horse trek services and worked alongside a Mental Health clinician from Maketu Health & Social Services who provided the talk therapy for these young people to deliver a comprehensive programme targeted at building self-confidence, self-esteem and relationship building skills.  Briar has had experience in facilitating equine therapy programmes in the past, working alongside various social service agencies within the community and has been trained in facilitating horse therapy programmes that provide interaction with horses to develop increased ability, independence and self-esteem for children and adults with physical, intellectual, emotional and social challenges.

Maketu Health & Social Services would like to gratefully acknowledge the support they received through the Maketu Flea Makets that enabled them to facilitate this programme.  The financial aid received from the Maketu Flea Markets paid for six weeks of lessons using this method of therapy.  This programme has demonstrated the success of this method of intervention, with those participating in the programme growing in self esteem, confidence, relationship building and communication skills as well as learning a whole new range of horse riding skills!  From Maketu Health & Social Services, we would like to say well done to those who participated and a big thank you to Maketu Flea Markets and local equestrian Briar Mascheretti for this amazing opportunity to support our local youth.
