Student Placements

Cherie Hill and Maree Huitema - Waiariki Student Nurses.
As part of Maketu Health & Social Services Strategic direction the organization has specific business goals to progress.  Two goals in particular Relationships and Building the capacity of our organization is essential to the future growth of our Hauora.  Several outcomes as a result of this direction have occurred in recent weeks a signed MOU and supporting student placements.

In recent weeks Maketu Health & Social Services has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Waiariki Institute of Technology for Student Nurse Placements.  Throughout the year our organization will be hosting students who are either in their second or third year of training towards their Bachelor of Nursing.  Year two students will be placed with our community nurse and all year three students are to gain knowledge in the  area of mental health assessment and care planning and will be working alongside our Mental Health nurses.

Maketu Health & Social Services has a fantastic track record of supporting not only its kaimahi in workforce development and education but students currently studying and looking to gain practical experience to support the kaupapa they have chosen.  In past years the hauora has had numerous student placements from a range of institutes studying in different disciplines such as Social Work, Nursing and Counseling.

On Monday 19th March we had the privilege to welcome on board Marie Huitema and Cherie Hill for their 4 week placement.

Cherie is in her third and final year of her nursing degree through Waiariki. While sitting her 4 week placement here at Maketu Health & Social Services she hopes to achieve a deeper understanding of mental health in the community setting. So far she says she has done amazing commitment to the Maketu community from the staff at MHASS and can't wait to spend more time with the children in the community and to see what the next two weeks brings her way!

Maree is in her third year nursing degree from Waiariki also. She is currently on clinical placement at Maketu Health & Social Services and looking forward to her career in emergency or surgical nursing.

At the conclusion of their 4 week placement another two students will begin their placement in our community for a four week duration.

Our organization has also welcomed on board Reg Te Moni who is completing his final year  studying a Bachelor in Social Sciences with Te Wananga o Aoteroa.  Reg has an interest in Domestic Violence and will be working alongside our Domestic Violence facilitators completing assessments and delivering group program to male respondents.  Regs’ placement will extend over an eight week period.

April Senior Holiday Program

This terms Senior Holiday Programme is underway.  On Tuesday we attended the TECT Arena Multi Sports Day where our local rangatahi displayed their awesome athletic ability.
The afternoon was spent swimming and jumping off rocks at Mount Beach.  Today saw our tamariki tackle the waves and hydroslide at Baywave.   They then finished their day playing touch and drawing sand pictures at Newdicks Beach.  Tomorrow our own Ki o Rahi expert Tony Brown will take our rangatahi through their paces then it’s off to Laser Tag in Oropi.  Friday sees us heading over to Whakatane to the Adventure SolutioNZ  to see who can brave the high ropes course.

Ka Awatea, Mai Maketu ki Tongariro Adult Alcohol and Drug program

Ka Awatea is the name of the current Adult Alcohol and Drug Program that is delivered out of Maketu Health and Social Services.  The program works from a Harm minimization context where individuals are educated, given comprehensive support and given tools to assist in the minimization of Alcohol and or Drugs to empower the individual and whanau life.  It is the intention of Maketu Health & Social Services to deliver a high quality Kaupapa Maori Addictions Program that has positive outcomes for both the individual and their whanau.  The programme is currently delivered in two locations, Maketu and Papamoa.
Ka Awatea is a comprehensive eight week Addictions Program.  It is an open program where individuals are able to enter at any point and continue until they have completed eight components.  Tikanga and kawa has been incorporated throughout the program so that participants work from a Maori framework.  This approach enables the program to tap into inherent traits and the untapped potential of the participants.  The program uses the Purakau, Tongariro and Pihanga or the Battle of the Mountains.  This is accompanied with the ALAC resource, The User Guide Booklet and it is a combination of western models and our Maori Worldview.  The program is made accessible to all cultures, Maori and non-Maori.
Client evaluations and feedback for this service has been very positive in regards to the program and content.  Many of the participants have commented that they have enjoyed learning how to address there alcohol and drug addiction issues through this service and would recommend it to other people.

National Well Child Day 2012

Tamariki Ora services celebrated the National Well Child Day 8th March 2012, by providing health education, promotion, resources and whanau support.

This year’s focus was on the Well Child/Tamariki Ora schedule six week check which looks at different aspects for baby from breastfeeding, immunizations, car restraints including talking and singing to baby.  One aspect in particular was demonstrated by Te Kupenga Hauora around the importance of child car restraints.  Families were shown how to install their child restraints correctly and able to discuss child safety.

In support of our day we acknowledge Family Planning, Heinz’s Watties NZ, Te Kupenga Hauora, Maketu Kohanga Reo and our community whanau.

For whanau/family wanting to register with Tamariki Ora services please contact Lyn Potaka at Maketu Health & Social Services on 07 5332 551.

Koroua & Kuia Early Intervention Programme

Recently, the Kaumatua group had requested for Dr Janice Priest to come and explain about a machine she endorses for Magnetic Resonance Therapy.

Dr Janice Priest is a natural health consultant, author and lecturer and with over 40 years experience, is well versed in many areas of natural and nutritional healthcare.  Dr Priest is also a lecturer and practitioner in most natural health modalities, such as nutrition, herbalism, homobotanicals, reflexology, iridology, homeopathy and many holistic subjects.
Janice originally trained as a children's nurse before qualifying as a naturopath with the vision to retain natural health treatments.
The MRT 5000 is a PEMF (pulsed electro-magnetic field) we call it Magnetic Resonance Therapy or MRT for short.
The MRT 5000 model is a clinic version and can be used to treat a multitiude of disorders and illnesses.
This unit is recommended to be used under clinic circumstances to treat any ailments, however can be used in conjuction with medical treatment without any adverse side effects.
The MRT 5000 works by inducing the body to grow its own stem cells. These precursers to every known cell in the body then migrate to the damaged area and replace dead, old or damaged cells.

This allows complete regeneration to take place. Potentially this device allows previously incurable conditions or even genetic disorders to return to a normal state.

Our Kaumatua were very enthusiastic and appreciative of Janice Priest's presentation and have already had some participate in the therapy with Janice at her clinic which is held in Tauranga. They walked away very pleased and so surprised with the results the MRT machine picked up on, and can now work towards better health, peace and understanding about themselves and their bodies. Overall it was a huge success to our Kaumatua and will wait with anticipation for the next visit from Janice.
