A Word from Finance..........

We’d like to give a VERY special thank you to Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust otherwise known as TECT for their generous contribution. This year just over $8000 was received as a contribution to be used toward the purchase of electrical items for Maketu Hauora.

With this money we were able to complete our project to purchase and install additional computers and equipment desperately needed for staff. Where previously 12 staff shared 5 computers with TECT’s contribution we’ve been able to purchase and install additional computers, a much needed resources as our services rely heavily on the recording of information and outcome data.

Kei runga noa atu koutou  TECT !
You are appreciated J

In addition some of you may recall back in 2011 and 2012 the Driver Licensing programmes that were run by Maketu Health & Social Services.  This was thanks to the support shown to our community by First Sovereign Trust.
Although some time ago now it was thanks to their financial support that we were able to run these programmes. Promote awareness about road safety and vehicle issues, and reduce the number of unlicensed drivers in Maketu.
Ka pai rawa atu First Sovereign!
You are appreciated J

FreeCycle

Our nonprofit mission is to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources & eases the burden on our landfills while enabling our members to benefit from the strength of a larger community."

Freecycle is an online portal where individual’s list items they want to give away for FREE. Everything from toys their kids have grown out of, to piles of garden pebbles no longer... required.A great place to pick up items for our whanau in need, Check out the website for details. Http://nz.freecycle.org/

What is Freecycle?

We are an online / email based community where people who have unwanted items can easily find other people who want them, rather than sending them to the landfills. This allows perfectly good (but unwanted) items from being thrown into the landfills, and giving them a new lease of life with a new owner.

The items you give must be FREE, legal and age-appropriate. More about this can be found on our F.A.Q.. You can see some examples of offers/wanted on our examples page

Based on the old adage that "one person's trash is another person's treasure", Freecycle's goal is to slow the flow of trash into our landfills by connecting people who want to get rid of old "stuff" with those frugal people looking for free "stuff".

Rangatahi Maia & Kahui Whetu Noho Marae

TUKOTAHI MARAE

As part of the Kahui Whetu program in collaboration with Rangatahi Maia we were able to execute the first noho marae for 2013. With awesome support from Maketu Hauora, this allowed us to be creative and initiate fun filled activities for the 25 youth that attended.  Components of the Kahui Whetu Program are lessons based on the affects and consequences of Alcohol, Drugs & smoking. Learning’s were applied through a combination of fun activities.
To end our fab noho we invited whanau to take part in our Poroporoake with a total of 75 people it was a packed out wharekai... In celebration, it was with much delight that we were immersed with such inspirational speakers that brought so much laughter to all whom attended,  The Rising star...Te Angihau Williams, (Local year 13 boy at Te Puke High School) the Motivator...Shane Te Hamua Nikora (Homai te Pakipaki).  Mr Williams spoke to the kids about following your dreams and inspirations.  Mr Shane Te Hamua Nikora spoke about his challenges in life and encouraged Tamariki to know their whakapapa and be proud of being Maori.  To complement and complete our awesome evening we were treated with the musically talented Billie Jill Bird.

Thanks so much for sharing your gifts with our Rangatahi, Hauora & whanau.

Maketu Hauora makes a stand on shops selling synthetic drugs in Te Puke

Maketu Health & Social Services often find themselves between a rock and a hard place in regards law and order and moral issues. The recent debate around the sale of legal highs such as synthetic cannabis is a case in point.

For example, taking a strong moral stand may endear a health service to the community but alienate it from the very people it seeks to work closely with – that is the users and often victims of the legal and illegal substances.  But take a stand we must, for as the saying goes, “if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything’.

In this regard, a “harm reduction” approach seems sensible. A harm reduction philosophy can be compared to the wearing a seat belt, it won’t prevent accidents, but it will reduce the chances of serious or fatal damage. The alternative of course would be never to drive a car.

Similarly, while the wholesale eradication of harmful substances from the shelves may be the ideal for some, the reality is that drugs in one form or another will always be a part of society.

No surprise then that we support the recently enacted law that seeks to regulate the sale of psychoactive substances, much in the same way that laws govern the sale of alcohol.

Mission Impossible

Wednesday 30th January 2013

This event is the first of many initiatives planned & being trial by the Taitamariki team at MK2 HASS.

A brief outlay of our day

Wednesday morning, we set out and placed the clues and flags on the designated areas around Maketu, We assigned Kaimahi at the 5 different locations.  At each point there were challenges that needed to be completed before tamaiti could move to the next destination.
Mid-day we met at Maketu Park. The spy kits were given to each group inside the kits contained mission rules, group colours, spy books pencils and a place to keep & protect their clues. Once the answer had been sort, each group received or had to find their group coloured flag before moving on.
“We are recruiting Agents for change in our community. Due to an injury Agent Skudder is unable to complete his mission on his own! We are looking for strong minded agents who want to embark on a better future.

YOUTH GUARANTEE PROGRAMME BAY OF PLENTY POLYTECHNIC

The Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is delivering the Youth Guarantee Programme in 2013 as part of the government initiative announced in the 2009 budget.
This initiative is aimed at improving the educational achievements of youth, by giving them the opportunity to participate in fully funded vocational courses. Promising to “engage young people that may otherwise be left behind by the education system” it is targeted at teenagers who are finding that school is not for them.
For 2013, the programme being offered for the Youth Guarantee learner is the:
Certificate in Maritime and Fishing Technology (Level 3 – 110 credits)
This programme has 6 courses and will be covered over the year:

The Youth Guarantee Programme will be offered in three communities based at Marae at Mangatawa, Te Puke and Tauranga. Each cohort will have a minimum class size of students.
The programmes will be facilitated by coordinators who are skilled in managing both the pastoral and learning requirements of the learners in the first instance before providing full scale launch into the programme specific.  The coordinators will identify and respond to the individual and group learning and pastoral needs.
Experts from within the commercial fishing industry will deliver the knowledge and skills relative to the programme requirements.

Rose Hellaby Scholarship 2013

Rose Hellaby pictured as a young woman

 Kia ora,

I hope all is well. A prestigious scholarship offering valuable financial support to Māori postgraduate, undergraduate and secondary students is calling for applications for its 2013 round of funding.

The Rose Hellaby Māori Education Fund, for which Guardian Trust is sole trustee, administrator and investment manager, distributed $130,000 earlier this year to 120 Māori student recipients, through the Māori Education Trust.

Benefactor Rose Hellaby, a descendant of the Auckland-based meat dynasty, was most interested in furthering Māori education in the fields of science, mathematics, medicine and technology. Together, Guardian Trust and the Māori Education Trust created the Rose Hellaby Postgraduate Māori Scholarships in 2010 to specifically support outstanding Māori students undertaking Masters, PhD or other postgraduate study in these fields.

The major recipients of the 2012 distribution were Miriama Ketu-McKenzie, Lewis Neihana-Tait Jones and Jessica Templeton. Miriama, the only Māori student in her intake was awarded the largest scholarship of $30,000 and is using it to support a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Massey University in Albany. Lewis and Jessica each received $15,000 towards their studies – Jessica is completing a Master of Engineering Management at the University of Canterbury and Lewis is working towards a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Psychology and completing a Masters in Psychology at the University of Waikato.

Applications for the 2013 scholarships are now open. Secondary applications close on 28 February 2013 and tertiary applications on 29 March 2013. Students can complete the application form online at http://www.maorieducation.org.nz
