Senior Holiday Programme

Tuesday was an Awesome Awesome day!!  We spent the day down at Newdicks Beach surfing, I was in the water all day and I am now seriously getting a real dark tan.  Primo day, short and long boards were available Tony Brown was there to help those of us that did not know how to surf.  Highlight of the day was just being on the water lying on my board talking with my mates and waiting for the next wave to catch.  The person that impressed me the most with their surfing skills was Mikaire.  I think it was cool seeing everyone in our roopu giving surfing ago.

Wednesday we headed down to Edgecumbe to complete the maze in maize.  The highlight of the day for me was swimming at the waterhole near Pongakawa – the water was freezing but the shock of it made you feel alive!! The weather has been hot as!!  The forecast for tomorrow is a high of 25 degrees.  Looks like another good day tomorrow for the Adrenalin forest, so watch this space.

Kaumatua Day Care

The Kaumatua Day Care (KDC) programme is up and running for the year! Kaumatua enjoyed a barbecue lunch at the monument, enjoying the lovely Summer weather, watching tamariki and rangatahi swimming and jumping off the diving board. We are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful place, with the bonus of an awesome community! Tumeke!
Our community nurse Winsome Harvey will be continuing with well checks on a regular basis and we also have hearing tests and cervical screening coming up next month.

Ashlyn Koce’s Blogg of the MHASS Junior School Holiday Programme (7 years old)

On my trip to Rainbow Springs we got to go to Rainbow Springs and feed the fish. There was a little bag of food with fish food and we were only allowed to feed them two handfuls. There was rainbow trout, ducks and swans. There was this underwater part where there were three different kinds of trout. There were rainbow trout, brown trout and normal trout. There was this cool river, and there is this river where the fish can go into.

We were going to go on the log ride but it wasn’t finished so I will go back with my family. I saw three kiwis and one was digging a burrow and it would duck it’s head in and then kick dirt out with its  feet. The other one just strolled around.

We went to Baywave and went on the water slide. I went backwards and blocked my ears so I wouldn’t get water in my ears and mouth.

Brahms farm was awesome! We all went on the waterslide and went in the freezing river and done some tubing. Then we jumped off the bridge. Others did that but I was a little scared.

On the last day of the holiday programme we had a pool party at Maketu School. We had a really big lunch...sausage sizzles, steak buns, hundreds of thousand cookies (two packets), wheelies biscuits, 2 kinds of Doritos.....cheese balls. We had a treasure hunt where we went around in groups and had to solve puzzles and we all got a prize at the end.

I made two new friends that go to other schools. It was cool making new friends.

I have been going on the holiday programme since I was 5 years. We do heaps of different things and go to heaps of different places. And its super fun.

A Summers Day In Maketu

Today is another beautiful summers day here in Maketu.  Mirimiri is happening in the hauora, the Kauamtua programme is enjoying a day down at the beach monument, the senior holiday programme is based at Newdicks beach surfing - talk about making the most of our local environment!!

Last night we ran and second Domestic Violence Programme “He Waa me Te Waa Mo Nga Tane”.  Feedback from the group was positive with each taking away a tool of personal development.  Adrienne (facilitator) enjoyed using the resource cards as it generated a deeper level of conversation within a safe environment.  The feedback from this process was a universal understanding that you are not alone and there are a variety of ways to share your feelings.  Definitely looking forward to receiving more feedback as the roopu develops.

Senior Holiday Programme

Today is Monday 23rd January and it is the first day of the senior holiday programme.  The sky was blue the sun was out but the breeze was makariri but by 10am it was stinking hot. Our day began at Te Kura o Maketu where we split into teams and played Pinky and Barlow followed by swimming in the school pool.  After lunch we went to Lazer Tag in Oropi.  Lazer Tag was awesome cause it was in a pine forest and you can go everywhere.  We split into two teams green and black, green won and yes I was not in the green team!!  Tomorrow going to be awesome cause we’re surfing at Newdicks beach – can’t wait!!  The roopu on this senior programme are all good!!  Can’t wait to go to the Adrenalin Forest.  Caleb P.

Kaumatua Programme

Whakaue Marae-Maketu.

Kaumatua programme started today at Whakaue Marae.  Suzy said today was about catching up with each other after the break and discussing what the year will hold for the programme.  Merita (Registered Nurse) attended the programme today to introduce herself to kaumatua and kuia who attend and took the opportunity to take blood pressures to ensure everyone was on track after the xmas and New Year break.  Merita said she enjoyed her morning and the discussions she had with each of them highlighting the importance of ensuring regular Warrant of Fitness checks were done.

Junior Holiday Programme

Day one of the holiday programme kicked off yesterday and the weather was spectacular.  Tamariki enjoyed a day out at Brahms Farm based in Paengaroa.  Whaea Nicky said the “Water slide was the favorite for the day”.  Young Ashlyn Koce was so excited about the day she had, her words were coming out jumbled – “The water was freezing and the slide was cool but some kids were scarred and OMG, I can’t wait for tomorrow cause we are going to the place with lion cubs and fish and I can’t wait”.

Mental Health Day Activities starts tomorrow.  Tangata Whaiora are invited to participate in a day of activities at the beach and BBQ. The day will also include discussion about what activities and education Whaiora would like to participate in throughout the year so that in can be incorporated into the weekly programmes.

Welcome On Board

Merita Orgias with husband Dave.
Today we had a whakatau for Merita Orgias.  Merita will be working with our team on a fixed term contract for one year working in the area of child & youth Mental Health.  We were privileged to have some of her whanau attend the whakatau and we are pleased to have another Maori registered nurse work alongside the team.  We are looking forward to Merita’s contribution to our whanau and what all of will be able to learn off her.  Over the coming weeks Merita will be getting out and about getting to know the community whanau and sitting on some of the hauora programmes to familiarize herself on all services we provide.

It’s also that time of the year again “School Holiday Programme”!!  Whaea Nicky has put together another fun filled week for our tamariki aged 5 – 9yrs of age.  Tamariki get to enjoy our local environment as well as have organized activity and games. This is always a popular event with the Senior programme following next week for rangatahi aged 10 – 16yrs of age.

Tonight we kick off with our very first Tane Respondent Programme in Te Puke.  This initiative has taken over 12 months to reach actual delivery to our whanau.  It is aim that this programme will provide our tane with tools to better manage situations so that positive change can be made.  We are looking forward to see how the programme is received by participants.

Tomorrow the Kaumatua programme kick starts for 2012.  Watch this space for upcoming news!!
